Bombers face mountainous start

Leitchville/Gunbower will start its Heathcote District Football League season tomorrow at Gunbower against Mount Pleasant.LEITCHVILLE/GUNBOWER will open its 2015 Heathcote District Football League season tomorrow, hosting fellow 2014 finalists, Mount Pleasant.

The Bombers will be looking to emulate its 2014 efforts, with the side losing to eventual premiers, Lockington-Bamawm United by 31 points in the preliminary final.

Matt Hawken, who led the side between 2003 and 2009, will return to the coaching fold tomorrow following Marty Shadbolt’s decision at the end of the 2014 season not to not coach the club.

Shadbolt moved pre-season to Loddon Valley Football League powerhouse, Bridgewater during the pre-season, joining Joel Donehue (Echuca), as well as Lancaster-bound Ryan Hocking, Russell Lee and Brad Perry in vacating the side.

However, the Bombers’ recruiters have found more than suitable replacements.

Reigning Mitiamo best and fairest, Matt Perri will boost the Bombers’ midfield and forward options, whilst Superoos teammate, Daniel Meroli will become one of the club’s key backmen, joining former Heidelberg player, Tom Shepherd.

Other new key recruits include former Reservoir best and fairest, Daniel Couwenberg, Castlemaine’s James Oliver and former Bombers captain Keiran Treacy, who will be used across the half-back line.

Tomorrow’s opponents, who lost to LBU in last season’s first semi-final, have lost 10 of its 2014 playing group.

Gone from the Blues side that secured the club’s first finals berth since 2008 are reigning best and fairest Kain Robins, HDFL interleague captain Tim Hill, leading goalkicker Matt Gretgrix and former coach Shaun Young.

However, returning coach Derrick Filo and his recruiting team have secured the services of goalkicking midfielder Simon Seddon, who has played representative football for the Goulburn Valley Football League and spent 2014 playing for Labrador in the Queensland AFL.

If the home side can stop Seddon, the Bombers will be on track to secure a second consecutive win at Gunbower against the Blues.

PREDICTION: Leitchville/Gunbower should win by 30 points.
