Celebration full of joy for Bermagui’s golden couple

Bermagui’s Errol and Wilma Masterson smile for the camera on their wedding day 50 years ago.

ERROL and Wilma Masterson of the seaside town of Bermagui have known each other their whole lives.

“She’s the girl I fell in love with,” Mr Masterson said.

“We knew who each other was, but we weren’t friends, then all of that changed when we got to about 18,” he said with a chuckle.

On Friday, April 10, the Mastersons will celebrate 50 years of marriage after tying the knot at the All Saints Church in Bermagui, alongside Reverend Ballard in 1965.

The two would spend every weekend at the cinema while courting and became a fearsome combination on the ballroom dance floor, while Ms Masterson waited patiently for her boyfriend to propose.

The proposal came at the tender age of 21, and now half a century later they appear happier than ever, spending every Sunday at the beach, and raising two children, four grandchildren and now a great-grandson along the way.

“I think the biggest highlight of all that time was the birth of our great-grandson,” Mr Masterson said.

“Wilma has stood by me through the good times and the bad times,” he said of his wife, the joy in his voice unmistakable.
