The ACU Sovereigns produced a huge second half to claim a 52- 47 win against DC North East Blaze at the State Netball Hockey Centre in Melbourne on Wednesday night.

Sovereigns were overpowered in the opening quarter, with Blaze doubling their score, and trailed by 10 goals by half-time.

By the final break, Sovereigns had chipped the margin back to four goals.

Sovereigns goalers were sharp. Melbourne Vixens goaler Carla Dziwoki shot 26 goals from 32 attempts (82 per cent accuracy) and Cynna Kydd shot 26 from 31 (84%).

This is Sovereigns first season in the VNL.

Sovereigns’ 19/under team is in the top four with seven wins and two draws from 12 matches and division one has one win on the board.

This week’s result is the first time a Ballarat-based VNL franchise has won a championship division match since 2013 when Ballarat Pride claimed a one-goal victory against Geelong on March 6. Pride also had a draw that season against City West Falcons on April 17.
