Around the same time, 15-year-oldRachel Hooper is admitted to Mia’s care.

Rachel, who has overdosed on alcohol ata party, is dealing with her own betrayalfrom someone she should be able to trust.

Rachel and Mia both want to hold theirfamilies together, but as Eric’s lies andabsences intensify, Mia decides she has tosee his lover for herself. It is when shefollows them and sees them together, thatshe realises Eric will not be coming backto her.

So begins Mia’s foray into a string ofnew, outlandish behaviours.

Mia and Rachel strike up a friendshipand Rachel at last speaks out. And bothMia and Rachel discover, each in her ownway, that she alone holds the key to herfuture.

Dianneis a former socialworker. She said the book was a storyabout self-discovery in middle age,misplaced loyalty and how the choices wemake determine who we are.

In 2007, she changed from writingchild welfare policy to writing creativelywhen she began a professional writingcourse at Adelaide College of the Arts.

The following year she won thePauline Walsh Prize in theEastwood/Hills Regional Annual LiteraryAwards and was highly commended for asecond entry.

In 2010 she co-wrote a collection ofnon-fiction short stories titled It’s AboutTime, on behalf of children’s charity‘Time for Kids’.

She said three factors inspired her towrite What Matters Most; her experiencein child protection, her experience in life,and her love for the Fleurieu Peninsula,where she does most of her writing.

“It’s an amalgam of lots of childrenI’ve worked with and lots of families,”Dianne said.

“I wanted something entertaining andnot too descriptive.

“I think Mia Sandhurst’s journeythrough betrayal is really good.

“It’s very human… It’s a bithumourous.”

Dianne is currently writing hersecond novel, which is also based on theFleurieu.
